Health Promotion & Chronic Disease Prevention

Substance Abuse Prevention 443-523-1760

This program will implement three model prevention programs in the community to support and expand the treatment program through early interventions and enhancement.

All Star Program

School or community based program designed to delay and prevent high-risk behaviors in middle school-age adolescents (11-14 years old)

Highly interactive program which focuses on the development of positive personal characteristics

Target areas include substance use, violence, and premature sexual activity

13 one hour weekly sessions

Second Step

A classroom-based social skills program for pre-school age children (ages 4-6)

Designed to reduce impulsive, high-risk and aggressive behaviors and increase children's social-emotional competence and other protective factors

15-20 minute sessions for 20 weeks, minimum of 4 sessions per week

Guiding Good Choices

A multi-media program that gives parents of children in grades 4-8 the knowledge and skills needed to guide their children through early adolescents

Promotes family bonding and gives the family skills for communication and problem solving

2 hour weekly sessions for 5 weeks

Eastern Shore Community Foundation Grant

Intended to expand the All Stars Program to be offered in the after-school program

Enabled us to celebrate Red Ribbon Week (Drug and Alcohol Prevention Week) at the Intermediate School where we handed out information to all of the students in 6 th and 7 th grades

Conducted an essay contest, resulting in great essays and three winners; each receiving prizes

Provide Spring Break Survival Kits to the students at University of Maryland Eastern Shore Campus before Spring Break. Each kit will contain informational brochures, and other items to ensure that they are prepared to have a safe break

Program Qualifications:

Head Start programs within the County
After school programs within the County
Parents of children in grades 4-8

Location: Programs conducted in various sites throughout Somerset County


Communities Mobilizing for Change on Alcohol
Program Highlights:

The Communities Mobilizing for Change on Alcohol (CMCA) is a prevention program that utilizes community organizing strategies designed to reduce adolescent access to alcohol.

The Somerset County Health Department has teamed up with the Maryland State Police Barracks X to perform compliance checks to businesses in the county.

A CMCA team formed with members from the community, and local agencies to discuss ideas and strategies to reduce underage drinking in the county.

Businesses operating in Somerset County that permits the sale of alcohol

Mission of Program:
The mission of the Somerset County Health Department is healthy people in healthy communities. This will be accomplished by assessing community health needs, and assuring that needed quality health services are available and accessible to the public.
