Program Highlights:
Somerset County Health Department has joined with the National Diabetes Education program (NDEP), the American Diabetes Association (ADA), and locally with McCready Health Services Foundation, and Three Lower Counties (TLC) to urge the Somerset County community members to be screened for diabetes. Early identification allows the client to modify risk favors which may prevent progression of the disease.
The Somerset County Health Department will open a FREE pre-diabetes health clinic for the community
The clinic will run every other Monday, 8:30 AM - Noon. Individuals will receive an American Diabetes Association (ADA) paper risk assessment test, blood pressure screening, along with a HA1C, and blood glucose test. Both blood tests are non-fasting and are finger-sticks.
Qualifications:
- Live or work in Somerset County
- Open to all individuals who have NOT been diagnosed with diabetes
- Individuals must make an appointment

Program Highlights
The purpose of the Minority Outreach and Technical Assistance Program is to improve the health status of targeted minority populations and eliminate or reduce health disparities. The goal of the MOTA program is to focus educational programs and technical assistance for African Americans, Hispanic/Latino, Native American and the Asian residents of Somerset County , to assist them in making better health decisions through health promotion and disease risk reduction intervention programs.
Resource Services Include
Somerset County Health Department outreach and community expertise is provided to individuals and groups within the county including a grant writing workshop, brochures and health education programs.
Participation in health screenings including colorectal, oral, breast and cervical, HIV screenings and health fairs, neighborhood events, and community gatherings.
Free walking classes - Tuesdays & Thursdays 11am-12 noon at the Woodrow Wilson Community Center in Crisfield.
Qualifications
Programs are open to all residents but especially targeted to focus on African American, Hispanic Latino, Native American and the Asian residents of Somerset County .
Lookin' Tight Livin' Right
P rogram Highlights:
The purpose of the Minority Health Program, "Lookin' Tight Livin' Right," is to improve the health status of targeted minority populations through health promotion and disease risk reduction intervention programs. This program will address cardiovascular disease among African Americans in Somerset County and will serve as the lead agency in conjunction with the Maryland Cooperative Extension Agency, John Wesley United Methodist Church-Cottage Grove, and the Somerset County Ministerial Association as coalition members and subcontractors. The goal of the program is to make life better for African Americans and the general population of Somerset County , to help them make better decisions about their health.
