S.I.D.S.

Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) is the leading cause of death in babies after 1 month of age with most deaths occurring between 2 and 4 months of age. More SIDS deaths occur in the colder months and African American babies are twice as likely to die of SIDS. Babies placed to sleep on their stomachs are much more likely to die of SIDS than babies placed on their backs to sleep.

WHAT YOU CAN DO TO HELP LOWER THE RISK OF SIDS:

  • Always place your baby on his or her back to sleep, even for naps.
  • Place your baby on a firm mattress.
  • Remove soft, fluffy bedding and stuffed toys from the baby's sleep area.
  • Make sure your baby's head and face do not get covered during sleep.
  • Do not allow anyone to smoke around your baby.
  • Do not let your baby get too warm during sleep.
  • Tell everyone who cares for your baby about SIDS prevention.
